I was told to clear my computer CMOS. If I do so what will I lose?

I am semi computer illiterate. =D I was told that I should reset my CMOS, but how exactly is this done? I was told to unplug the battery or something, then plug it back in. Is there an easier way? And if I do this, will I lose any data I have saved on my C drive? help please...
