Apartment has tons of problems, what should I do?
The steps that needed to be taken ( and to be done with any rental ) are to note the problems that are considered health or safety hazards / issues, make a written list, then send a copy of the list - certified mail, signature required - to the landlord AND the building owner / or leasing company........all of this must be done in writing, as just speaking to someone does no good at all. Things like excessive tenants are not your concern. The issue with the bath window could have been solved with a cheap bath curtain and/or leave the window open after a shower w/o you being in there. The LL or owner may try to get you to pay for repairs, etc after you move - to prevent this, make a list of anything that even looks like it is in need of repair; then a day before you are completely moved, have the LL make a walk thru the unit - give him/her the list and have him/her note all needed items so that you two can come to an agreement before you move - this will save lots of headache and $$$
